Doors are one of the most important parts of our homes. They do so much for us and when they aren’t functioning properly they can be one of the biggest annoyances ever, especially if they’re impeding basic access for older adults. Instead of just letting these annoyances become something that you have to deal with and then take action, which can be expensive and a hassle. There are so many things that you can do to make your home more accessible and easier to live in, which is exactly what we’re going to be discussing in this blog post. Keep reading to learn more!
Replace Door Knobs
For many people who may suffer from arthritis or loss of movement in the wrist, twisting door knobs can be a painful task. One easy thing to do, is to replace any knobs with levers. These are much more simple for people to open than the traditional round door knob. Internal door hardware is also pretty affordable and accessible to find. They’re also pretty easy to replace and can be done by the homeowner themselves.
Realign Your Doors
Chances are that at least one of the doors in your home is misaligned, making it difficult and sometimes impossible to open. Not only are they difficult to open, but they can also be causing more damage to the door frame and the door, which can lead to even more costly replacements and maintenance. Most of the time the problem is minor. You may even be able to see where the door is caught and you can easily push it back into place. Sanding the area where the door is rubbing is another easy fix, however you will want to make sure that you’re not sanding too much. You may also be able to slightly bend one or both of the door hinges. Crescent wrenches can be used for this.
If you’ve found yourself needing extra assistance throughout the home, and you’re now using any type of walker, cane, or wheelchair, you may have found that your doorways aren’t as compliant as they could be. Luckily there are a few options. You can try using “swing clear” hinges. These hinges allow the door to swing completed out of the door frame, allowing you a couple more inches of space, which can make a huge difference. You might also find it helpful to remove the door entirely, as clearing the door can give you more space to move without having to worry about the door getting in the way.
Sliding doors can be a bit more difficult than the normal swinging doors on hinges, which means they can be even more difficult to maneuver for seniors. Some things that you can do routinely to help them keep their traction is to clean out the tracks regularly, lubricate moving parts, adjust the alignment when needed, or replace them with another form of entry like french style doors.
Garage doors can be one of the hardest doors to open and close, especially if they do not have a remote and need to be opened manually. They can also be dangerous for older adults since they can close so quickly with such great amounts of force. Not only can they be hard to open and close, but they can also be hard to repair and maintain — especially if you’re somewhat physically impaired or restricted. Some things that you can do to help maintain your garage and make it more accessible for yourself is to,
- Lubricate the door hardware (make sure you’re looking for lubricant specifically labeled for garage door hardware)
- Remove excess dirt and debris from the door and the surrounding areas
- Replace your door springs
- Consider purchasing an automatic garage door opener
- Consider purchasing a keyless entry system
All of these changes can easily help you maintain and actually utilize your garage. Not only does your garage help protect your car and other belongings, but it can also serve as a security factor for you and your home.
