If your garage door has been having issues, it can be hard to figure out if this is something that can be easily repaired or if you’re going to have to replace the entire door. While it depends on each individual situation, you’d be surprised to see how much you can actually repair.

Save yourself time and money by figuring out the real root of the problem. At Door Doctor Inc, we’re here for all your garage door repair needs. We understand that a garage is a huge convenience and that when it’s not working properly it can be extremely frustrating. In this blog post, we will be going over how to know if you can repair your garage door or if you need to replace it. This can be a confusing thing to figure out, which is why we’re here to help. If you have any further questions about anything related to garage door repair, call us today at (941) 212-1747.

First things first, try and identify the problem. For example, if the door came down on something or the cable slipped off of the drums, it can be a lot easier for a repairman to asses the situation. Usually, something concrete happens that we’re aware of that causes our garage doors to stop working like they usually do. You also want to be aware that many situations can be made worse by someone trying to fix it themselves. Garage doors can be finicky, so it’s best to let an expert handle it. While we love the enthusiasm of you wanting to fix it yourself, let us do the heavy lifting.

Structural vs Cosmetic

If your garage door has been hit with or by something, try and figure out if the damage is purely cosmetic or if there has been actual damage done to the structure of the garage door. It doesn’t have to be one or the other, many times it’s both. Surprisingly, structural damage tends to be easier to fix than cosmetic damage. Yes, it’s unfortunate to have a garage door that isn’t as aesthetically pleasing to look at, but you’ll be much happier knowing that it actually functions well! While there’s a lot that can be done for a door that’s not functioning properly, there’s not much that can fix a cosmetic issue other than trying to push or hammer out the dent that is there. One thing to note is that if a door is cracked or dented along the joints between sections it will most likely require you to replace the whole section before it will work properly.

Similar to a car, if the cost to repair the door is more than the actual garage door is worth, you’ll probably want to replace the entire thing. While some manufacturers can be fairly reasonable with the cost of the replacement section, others seem to charge an arm and a leg for a simple replacement. A good rule of thumb to use is that if more than two sections are damaged beyond repair, you’re most likely approaching the cost of a new door. While repairing a few sections could be less expensive, if you’re going to have to continuously repair them it may be worth it to replace the entire door. Only you know your financial limits, how much/long you intend to use the door, and what you want it to look like, so in the end, it is all up to you.

Age of the Door

If you’ve recently invested in a new garage door, we can only imagine your frustration when it stops working. If your door is relatively new, and it’s having issues you’ll probably be able to repair it. Depending on the company you’ve bought it from, especially if it’s a high-quality company, they most likely offer a warranty that will cover you in some circumstances. However, if your door is 10 years old or older, and things are wearing out, you may want to consider starting fresh. Once again, if the door is constantly needing more repairs, those costs can pile up and it may be a better financial decision to replace it.
